"Multilingualism and equal rights in the EU: the role of sign languages"
was the name of a conference organised by MEP Helga Stevens, the first woman MEP who identifies as a deaf sign language user and a campaigner for the rights of deaf and disabled people. The conference held on 28 September 2016 in the European Parliament was attended by over 1,000 people from across the EU. There was interpretation into all 31 EU sign languages and all 24 official spoken languages.
Amongst others, speakers addressed the sign language resolutions of the European Parliament (1988 and 1998). The EU has ratified the UN CRPD (United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities) in 2010 and will now implement provisions facilitating accessibility and equality for all disabled persons.
