The 3rd General Assembly of EULITA in London on 6 April 2013 will take place in conjunction with the APCI Conference on “The Challenges to Professional Translation and Interpreting in the Justice Sector” (www.apciinterpreters.org.uk) on 5 and 6 April 2013. It is preceded by the launch conference for the QUALETRA (Quality in Legal Translation) project on 4 April 2013 (qualetra@eulita.eu).

The Czech Chamber of Court Appointed Interpreters and Translators organises this international conference from 2 to 4 February 2012 to celebrate its 15th anniversary. EULITA’s 2nd General Assembly will take place immediately after the conference on 4 February. The first of a total of four workshops was held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from 24 to 26 November. Some 100 participants from seven EU member states and three associated countries discussed ways and means for the practical implementation of the EU Directive on the right to interpretation and translation in criminal proceedings. EU Vice-President V. Reding emphasized the need for judicial stakeholders to obtain information on the measures necessary to transpose the Directive as the deadline for implementation is approaching fast.

Several UK-based professional associations joined forces to commission an independent survey on the impact of the UK’s plans to outsource interpreting services for the police and judiciary. As a House of Commons debate did not lead to any progress in the matter, Unite, the trade union, has now launched a campaign "Speak up, speak out“ where APCI Chairman G. Buckingham gave an outline of the situation.

The resolution adopted at the BDÜ Conference in March calling for a rise in court interpreting fees was officially deposited with the responsible authorities.

The Special Interest Group on Translation and Interpreting for Public Services (SIGTIPS), which the European Language Council set up in 2010, worked on the basis of two previous reports, i.e. the Final Report of the High Level Group on Multilingualism and the Final Report of the Reflection Forum on Multilingualism and Interpreter Training, and took the issue of interpreting and translation one step further in the direction of acknowledging linguistic assistance as a basic human right.

The TRAFUT partners are pleased to announce that a series of high-level experts has signed up for the first TRAFUT workshop in Ljubljana, Slovenia. INTERPRETERS staged a walkout at Bradford Asylum and Immigration Tribunals yesterday in protest at Ministry of Justice plans to contract with one supplier to provide language services at courts and tribunals.
