Building Mutual Trust: a framework project for implementing EU common standards in legal interpreting and translating
EU Criminal Justice Programme, project no: JLS/2007/JPEN219
2008 – 2011
The Building Mutual Trust project ( JLS /2007/219) seeks to contribute to the establishment of common standards in legal interpreting and translation (LIT) in the EU Member States.
The project has been coordinated by Middlesex University with the collaboration of a consortium consisting of Lessius University, Universidad de Alcala, Universidad de Alicante, Aarhus Universitet, Copenhagen Business School, University of Iasi, Luspio Libra Universita, the London Metropolitan Police and the Chartered Institute of Linguists.
On the basis of the recommended benchmark competences and curriculum templates of training courses, the project introduces a large collection of training materials onto which local solutions to training needs can be grafted. This materials bank, which is at the heart of the project, is a repository for wider dissemination as they are held online on the Building Mutual Trust website (http://www.buildingmutualtrust.eu/) and can be downloaded from there free of charge. It is hoped that it will be supplemented over time with contributions by other users addressing different training topics in different language combinations.
Finally, the project extends the theme of training in LIT with chapters on computer-assisted training in LIT, on the training of trainers and on training of judicial service personnel on how to work with LITs in the performance of their duties.
The outcomes of the project are also available in print: Brooke Townsley, ed., Building Mutual Trust, Middlesex University, 2011. ISBN 978 1 85924 321 3.
