On 16 June 2010 the European Parliament adopted the Directive on the Rights to Interpretation and Translation in Criminal Proceedings with 637 votes in favor, 21 dissenting votes and 19 abstentions. According to the EU timetable the Council will confirm the Directive in September. At the same time, work has begun on a “Best Practice” Recommendation that will help to implement the Directive.

At the trilogue meeting on 17/18 May 2010, the Presidency reached a provisional agreement with the European Parliament and with the Commission on the text of the draft Directive on the rights to interpretation and to translation in criminal proceedings.
EULITA to hold its first General Assembly in March 2011
EULITA has accepted the BDÜ’s invitation to hold its first General Assembly on Sunday, 27 March 2011, in conjunction with the BDÜ’s “5. Gerichtsdolmetschertag” in Hannover, Germany. FIT and EULITA establish formal liaison
At the FIT Council meeting in Moscow on 28/29 May, FIT and EULITA agreed on formal liaison contacts between the two organisations. Zofia Rybinska, Vice-President of EULITA and Co-Chair of the FIT Committee for Legal Interpreting and Translation, has been asked to liaise between FIT, its regional centre FIT-Europe and EULITA. EULITA has asked FIT-Europe to also appoint a representative who will assume the liaison on the part of FIT-Europe.
