VADEMECUM
These guidelines for a more effective communication between magistrates, prosecutors, attorneys and legal interpreters and translators were developed as a joint project between EULITA (European Legal Interpreters and Translators Association) and ECBA (European Criminal Bar Association). They were presented at the ECBA Spring Conference in Antwerp, Belgium, in April 2010, as well as at the EULITA General Assembly in Hannover, Germany, in March 2011.

New publication on legal interpreting
Christiane Driesen and Haimo-Andreas Petersen – a renowned trainer of legal interpreters and translators and an experienced judge – are the authors of ‘Gerichtsdolmetschen’ which Narr Francke Attempto Verlag is publishing. Although written in German, the book will certainly become a standard feature on bookshelves throughout Europe.

Ottawa court interpreters looking to unionize
Freelance court interpreters in the Ottawa area, many of whom are currently boycotting new assignments to voice their displeasure over wages that have stagnated over the past decade, are in the midst of holding discussions with the oldest and one of the largest media unions in Canada in a bid to strengthen their hand in negotiations with the Ontario government.

FIT XIXth World Congress, San Francisco, USA, 1-4 August 2011
The FIT Congress, which is held every three years and co-hosted and organised by a FIT member association, is a marvellous forum for translators, interpreters, terminologists and educationists to come together and exchange ideas and information. We hope this year to have over 1 000 delegates from the countries where we have members and beyond. With over 10 000 members, the organisers of this year’s Congress – the American Translators Association – are well placed to present this event with FIT.
